Ancient village immersed in the green rolling of the Sicilian hills, it extends between the provinces of Trapani and Palermo, lying on its splendid terrace, at the foot of Mount Bonifato, from which it dominates the suggestive Gulf of Castellammare. It extends to 276 m. from sea level, the land slopes gently towards the Tyrrhenian Sea with its splendid fine sand beach of Alcamo Marina. This territory conquers for the richness of the historical-archaeological, cultural, naturalistic beauties and the simple tastes of the traditional kitchen. Alcamo, city of the poet "Cielo" author of the oldest poetic composition in Italian that made this center famous with the verses of "Rosa fresca aulentissima", has an ancient center full of monumental and artistic heritage, with its baroque churches and castles, like that of the Counts of Modica and Calatubo, and the architectures of the “bagli” that characterize the landscape of the countryside.
Appreciated seaside tourist center, with a splendid and welcoming beach of golden sand with shallow waters. The people, the alleys, the bridges, the staircases and the most suggestive places lead you to live a serene and carefree holiday. Very interesting is its Arab-Norman castle and its marina, both for lovers of freshly caught fish and for those who want to thrill with unforgettable boat trips and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the coast, such as the Zingaro, Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo.
Situated in a splendid position, among rolling hills of yellow and red-brown colors that form a pleasant contrast with the infinite shades of green, the Archaeological Park is dominated by the size of the elegant Doric Temple. The Temple of Segesta, one of the most perfect monuments reached by us from antiquity, rises in majestic solitude. Built in 430 b.C., it’s an elegant Doric building with the proportions of a rare harmony. The theater, built in the III century B.C. in the Hellenistic period but under the Roman domination, it’s constituted by a perfect and vast hemicycle of 63 m of diameter placed on a rocky slope. The steps are oriented towards the hills behind which, on the right, you can see the Gulf of Castellammare. Every year, in the summertime, the theater is reborn filling up with spectators ready to savor, in a timeless bond, the great tragedies and comedies that captivated the Ancients.
A small fishing village with its “Faraglioni” of incomparable beauty. From there, on foot, you can visit the Oriented Nature Reserve of the Zingaro, a naturalistic paradise with numerous coves to immerse yourself in the splendid Sicilian waters.
The Oriented Nature Reserve of the Zingaro is formed by a rocky limestone coast of the Mesozoic, interspersed with numerous coves and characterized by sheer cliffs that from a maximum height of 913 m. (Monte Speziale) quickly lead to the sea. The land making up the reserve is the result of the intertwining of human activity and the evolution of nature, in fact, until recently, every surface, even if small, was cultivated for agricultural purposes. The Reserve enchants for its rugged beauty for the intense colors in every season, for the white coves set in a turquoise sea, for the ubiquitous dwarf palms, the luxuriant Mediterranean maquis, the tenacious olive trees and the majestic carob trees from where the harmonious shapes can be seen of peasant houses. The terrestrial landscape is closely linked to the sea, which is not only the geographical boundary but the constant background of the landscape and the indispensable complement to the naturalistic aspects. The coastal profile is an alternation of high rock walls that sink into the blue and inlets towards the sea. Rich in coves whose calcareous substrate enhances the transparency of water just like a tropical environment. The underwater landscape is a continuous succession of colors and shapes. The presence of Cystoseira stricta seaweed proves the purity of the water. Where the blue is uniform, animals with a floral appearance become more frequent: anemones, sea rosies, madrepores. Sponges with yellow and violet red tones, cover caverns and tunnels. At a considerable depth there is the red coral. The sea is rich in labridae and blenniidae with very colorful liveries. The coast is bordered by limestone shells.
Trapani fascinates for its cultural, artistic and environmental beauty. It offers the possibility to enjoy its many churches and its splendid Baroque palaces. Famous is the Procession of the Mysteries that starts from 2pm on Good Friday for over 24 hours. It’s the longest and oldest Italian religious manifestation, clearly of Spanish origin. The mysteries of Trapani are an artistic and devotional treasure of unparalleled beauty. Of great naturalistic interest is the Oriented Natural Reserve of the salt of Trapani, a real laboratory where the appreciated iodized integral salt is produced.
The town, suspended between the clouds, is a marvelous synthesis of art, history and landscape and preserves practically intact its medieval center perfectly integrated with the morphology of the mountain and harmoniously merged with the splendid surrounding nature. Walking through the streets of Erice takes you back to the past and it’s nice to wander through the narrow streets of the village, the cobbled streets, the silent courtyards of the houses full of plants and flowers and enjoy the rarefied silence of the churches and convents. The city center preserves the charm of an ancient fortified village animated by typical craft shops: finely decorated ceramics, hand-woven colorful carpets, etc. In Erice there is the "Ettore Majorana Scientific Culture Center”, rich in cultural initiatives for the city and which over the years has become a center of excellence in the field of scientific research at international level.
